Throughout this book are “Destinies,” moments where you will make essential choices that determine how the game plays out. Every time a character makes a check or attack roll or casts a spell, they should flip to the appropriate Destinies section and follow along with what’s happening in the story, making choices as they go. All of these decisions are resolved by the end of your game session—usually in less than four hours—and each decision changes how the story plays out.

You can play as one of six pre-generated characters. Each character has their motivations, personality, and skills. They handle challenges differently, and each is more successful at specific challenges. If a character fails a challenge, it doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s game over—sometimes failure leads to an even more exciting turn of events.

Waterdeep Dragon Heist is a Dungeons & Dragons session that you can play in just one sitting. It has everything you need to immerse yourself in a fantastic adventure, packed into one single book.

When you play Waterdeep Dragon Heist, you’ll create an adventuring party of six characters who are all trying to achieve the same goal—saving the city of Waterdeep from the clutches of the evil dragon Nefarian. The characters will travel through various parts of this enormous city as they make their way toward Nefarion’s Lair. Along the way, they’ll encounter many different kinds of people and creatures, some friendly and some not so friendly.

In Waterdeep, the thriving metropolis in the heart of the Forgotten Realms, a powerful artifact is stolen from under its guardian’s nose. The thief is an unknown power with considerable knowledge about safecracking and magical wards. It leads a group of professional burglars to break in and steal a mysterious item known only as “the dragon’s tongue.”

The city council suspects this group may also be connected to other unsolved crimes—a rash of burglaries at noble houses and an attempted robbery at the temple of Oghma. To bring the thieves to justice, Lord Neverember, ruler of Waterdeep, hires a group of adventurers to track down the thieves.

The would-be heroes are warned that this is a dangerous mission, and they may end up dead or worse. However, if they succeed, they will be generously rewarded by a noble patron, and their exploits will be engraved on a plaque at the House of Heroes. Well, no one cares what happens to them if they fail.
